CHINA

Country Overview:

"A land of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet rapid modernization, and delectable cuisine coexists with complex political realities."

My seven-year journey in China, from May 2013 to August 2020, was a whirlwind of experiences. I taught English, pursued my Master's in Politics & Foreign Policy at the prestigious Tsinghua University, and immersed myself in the media landscape at China Today and Xinhua News Agency. Beijing was my home base, but my travels painted a vibrant tapestry of China's diverse landscapes and cultures: the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, the historic city of Xi'an, the tropical paradise of Sanya, the unique blend of East and West in Macau and Hong Kong, and countless other destinations in between. From savoring the exquisite flavors of regional cuisines to navigating the intricacies of daily life under a distinct political system, China left an indelible mark on me.

Well done China

It's no secret that here in Beijing, there are many things that I, for lack of a better word, 'hate'. However, there is one thing that we as Beijingers can unanimously agree is awesome and that is: couriers. China's delivery system is beautifully chaotic. The lawlessness of the road allows for motorcycles, electric bikes, cyclists, and any other make-shift transportation to instantly deliver whatever your heart desires. The top of the list are packages from Taobao, and next would be takeout food. There are apps devoted solely to takeout, with over 100 restaurants in your area, you select the food, and within an hour, some Chinese guy in a colored outfit is at your door. The integration of using Wechat wallet or Alipay into every aspect of Chinese consumer life has made buying things extremely easy. Some more obscure delivery items include medicine from a pharmacy, fresh fruit, and those water cooler things you see in offices. As a self proclaimed 'developing' country, life in Beijing can be culturally challenging, but the efficiency with which I can obtain material goods is astoundingly simple. I don't exactly know how efficient the mechanics of the operation are, but as someone on the receiving end of what I order, no complaints so far.

Hermano

Happy birthday to my little brother Mackenzie! A big 25 today and I wish you all the best from Beijing. You have pushed me, inspired me, and made me think of what it means to be a brother. Remember when padre sat us down in the living room to read us "Who moved my cheese?" as we squirmed about under the chairs? Or going over to Ed's for ice cream and that inevitable lingering smell of cigarettes as Norma did the crossword? Every time I see the scar on my left arm I'm reminded of chasing you out the back door, shattering glass just for a baseball glove. Hell of a glove though. We've roadtripped to Montana, partied in McCall, and spent countless times together laughing for no reason. I cherish those memories and look forward to creating more with you in the future.  Much love and have a wonderful birthday!
