CHINA
Country Overview:
"A land of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet rapid modernization, and delectable cuisine coexists with complex political realities."
My seven-year journey in China, from May 2013 to August 2020, was a whirlwind of experiences. I taught English, pursued my Master's in Politics & Foreign Policy at the prestigious Tsinghua University, and immersed myself in the media landscape at China Today and Xinhua News Agency. Beijing was my home base, but my travels painted a vibrant tapestry of China's diverse landscapes and cultures: the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, the historic city of Xi'an, the tropical paradise of Sanya, the unique blend of East and West in Macau and Hong Kong, and countless other destinations in between. From savoring the exquisite flavors of regional cuisines to navigating the intricacies of daily life under a distinct political system, China left an indelible mark on me.
Packages
So you order a package on Taobao and after 2-3 days, you get a text message telling you it's arrived, with the delivery company name and a number. You then go to "the package place", and patiently wait in line, tell the guy your number, and then they throw it over the wall and voila, you've got your package. This place is always busy but since 11/11, where over $14 billion worth of goods were sold, it's been a bit busy.
Harry Potter Lives
Quidditch club here at Tsinghua. Now I'm all for doing what you think is fun, but I couldn't help but shake my head at these guys. And ya, they have broomsticks
Chinese Gates
Gate headed into Nanluoguxiang. I always feel like these things have stood the test of time and have been here since the age of dynasties. This thinking is most likely a result of my poor recollection of Chinese history and for all I know, could have been erected a decade ago
Squarespace
I have officially moved my blog from Tumblr to Squarespace. So I've separated things a bit. To read about my year in Peru, check out 'Aventuras (Peru)' and anything from China until now, I'll continue to use 'Aventuras (China)'. In 2016 I'll start a new blog and 'Aventuras (China)' will date from 5/13-12/16. To make searching for old content easier, click on 'About' and you can browse the archive or find stuff through 'search'. For new content after 12/16, there will be a new tab which I have yet to cleverly name. Bear with me as I continue to edit the site and figure things out on this new platform.
New logo for my site designed by my buddy Nick here in Beijing. Check him out at instagram: Nickolai_art and Tumblr: nickolaiart.tumblr.com
Spicy potatoes on the left and chicken & chestnuts on the right. Something that I’ll never get used to is the amount of bones in Chinese cooking. They literally just cut the chicken up and cook it, bones and all.
As Fall slowly fades away, I’m preparing for November 15th, when central heating for Beijing finally turns on. Pollution for the next 3 months is worth a warm winter, right? Ironic that as I was posting this I received a notification from my AQI app warning me of ‘heavy pollution’. GOOD TIMES BEIJING! Keep 'em coming…
I’m currently petitioning to get a squat rack in our gym so homeboy doesn’t break something
Beijing Guoan jersey with signatures
北京国安! My friend teaches the goalie’s daughter and asked for a favor; I guess teaching English has its benefits. She told me it’s worth ¥15.000, but having been to the games, this is something I’d prefer to hold onto.
