Skopje's over-the-top baroque renovation is bizarre, but Lake Ohrid makes up for everything.
Hit Skopje in 2020 during the Balkans stretch and it's a city that makes you do a double-take. The government built hundreds of classical statues and neoclassical buildings in an attempt to create national identity — it's weird and fascinating. Lake Ohrid nearby is genuinely one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe.
