Visited in 2014 and Hong Kong is unlike anywhere else on the planet. The skyline at night from Victoria Peak is one of the great city views in the world. Dim sum for breakfast, dai pai dong for dinner — the food alone is worth the trip.
Hong Kong in 2014 felt like a city designed for science fiction. Skyscrapers glow like circuit boards, the harbourfront Ferris wheel spins in front of them, and the Star Ferry crosses back and forth all night. I sat on the deck alone once, wind in my face, and felt tiny and infinite at the same time. Then I took the tram up Victoria Peak for the classic view, and it's classic for a reason.
The little things got me too. "Look right" painted on the street in English and Chinese because you will absolutely look the wrong way. Signs on the buses asking you to keep your voice down. Dim sum carts in the morning, roast goose over rice for lunch, and dai pai dong food stalls at night. Hong Kong moves fast and stacks everything on top of everything else, and somehow it all fits.
