Rougher around the edges, but the Bay Islands are some of the best diving in the world.
Passed through during the Central America run in 2011. The mainland is gritty and misunderstood, but the Caribbean coast and Copán ruins make it worth the detour. Most people skip it — I think that's a mistake.
Honduras was a pass-through on my 2011 run through Central America, and most travelers treat it that way. That's a mistake. Copán, right by the Guatemalan border, has some of the most detailed Mayan carving anywhere. The hieroglyphic stairway and the stelae look like they were finished last week. The town around the ruins is small and friendly and easy to like.
The Bay Islands are the other reason to go. Roatán and Utila sit on the edge of the second biggest barrier reef in the world, and the diving there is famously good and cheap. The mainland can be rough, and the big cities have earned their reputation, so I kept moving. But the Honduras I saw was welcoming, cheap and beautiful, and nowhere near as scary as the headlines.
