Grew up here, which means I spent most of my life wanting to get out. Now that I've been everywhere, I get why people fight so hard to get in. Still prefer the road, but it's good to have roots.
I grew up in the United States and spent a lot of my life trying to leave it. Now I live on the other side of the world, and every trip back reminds me how big and strange and varied the place really is. Road trips with paper maps in the back seat as a kid are some of my earliest travel memories, and probably the reason I still love maps.
On recent visits I've spent time in San Francisco, which is still one of my favorite American cities. Steep streets lined with purple hydrangeas, views down to the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge past a red railing, and an In-N-Out burger, because some things you just can't get in Thailand. I'm more of a visitor now than a local, and that's fine. It's still home in the way only the place you grew up can be.
