Paris is clichéd for a reason — it really is that beautiful, and the food really is that good.
Solo trip in 2015 and Paris held up. I went in skeptical — too hyped, too touristy — and left converted. Walking along the Seine at night, eating a croque monsieur at a sidewalk café at midnight... it works. Hard to argue with a city that's been perfecting itself for centuries.
I went to Paris in 2015 expecting to be let down. Instead I spent a week walking until my feet hurt, from the Bastille to the Seine to the Eiffel Tower, which looks even better at dusk when it lights up gold and the searchlight starts sweeping the sky. I gave it a thumbs up. It earned it. I also started noticing the little Space Invader mosaics hidden on walls all over the city, and hunting for them became its own game.
The food was the real reason I came around. French onion soup with a crust of baked cheese, seared fish with herbed mash, and sushi eaten straight out of the tray when I wanted a break from butter. Paris cafés are theater. The waiters ignore you, and nobody rushes you out, so I sat for three hours over half an espresso with a notebook open. That's the Paris that sold me.
